Homeschoolers Go Back To School

Tuesday the 3rd is our first day back at school, and the beginning of my 10th year teaching for LEAD Homeschool Organization.  The group is run by a committee of parent members, and in addition to regular park days and planned field trips, they rent out a Boys and Girls Club twice a week for classes. I teach a combination of cooking, domestic sciences and history.  (I am also a student, starting my 4th year of Mandarin Chinese! Wǒ bù néng chī miànjīn!)

I love my kids, their parents, and the whole group dynamic.  We have great group activities like Science Fairs and parties, a Student Bazaar where they get to sell items they’ve made, Pajama Day and other fun stuff.   I walked outside one day to find a class on broom making going on, so I jumped in and tried it too!

I’ll be teaching a Cooking for Special Diets class this time around, and we’ll be starting tomorrow with a review of some gluten-free grains.  (Soon I’ll have a short video to share about gluten free grain options!) Since it is a small class, I will poll the students to see what specific needs they have and we’ll design the class around them.   Thursday I will start back up with my Healthy Cooking For Teens class, as well as diving into history in Roman Britain.

I remember dreading the whole ‘back to school’ experience, but now I am always excited to get back to it.  I hope your summer was a wonderful season, and your autumn is filled with the promise of more good things to come!
