Cold-Weather Cure-Alls at The Learning Kitchen

I’m so pleased to have a new venue in which to offer classes!  The Learning Kitchen at the Sweet Auburn Curb Market has just opened up and I’ve already taught my first class there.

On February 4th I taught Cold Weather Cure-Alls, and everyone had a great time. We even attracted some APD Officers, one that had a bad cold, and she got dosed with everything we were making – Wild Cherry Bark Cough Syrup, Lemon Spice Throat Lozenges, Caroler’s Toddy, and Soothing Skin Balm! The enthusiasm among the students for the knowledge about herbal preparations has inspired me to offer a whole line of herbal classes coming up!

Check out the Learning Kitchen’s website for class details, and look for me teaching Knife Skills on March 4th and Gluten-Free Flour Bends on March 11th.

The Learning Kitchen is the brainchild of Lyn Deardorff of PreservingNow.  Lyn’s passion for having a place to teach the forgotten kitchen arts is near and dear to my heart, and I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to be one of many fine teachers that will be offering classes there.

Syrups and Electuaries

Among the cure-alls we made in class, we created several types of soothing teas and tea additives.  We started with a simple Ginger Honey Lemon Electuary. An ELECTUARY is a powder mixed with a syrup, honey, brown sugar or glycerin for a more pleasant taste or more convenient internal use.  The beautiful thing about an electuary is that you can mix up on the spur of the moment, as needed.

Ginger Honey Lemon Electuary
1 tbsp. honey
¼ tsp. ground ginger (fresh or dried)
Squeeze of fresh lemon juice
1 cup of hot tea

  1. Mix the ground ginger into the honey. Stir to mix well.
  2. Brew your cup of tea as usual.
  3. Stir the ginger honey electuary into the tea.
  4. Squeeze in lemon and enjoy.
